Ben Van Bonn Theo Angell's self-reliant energy makes me want to dance around a fire tipsy on dandelion wine. The melodies on this album sound as if they are just now escaping a millennium of dormancy to be recorded -- in the golden era of multitrack recording.

about

Despite previous releases under this name, and work with Jackie-O-Motherfucker and Hall of Fame, Theo Angell remains a relatively unknown name. This album will change that; Auraplinth is a brilliant, distinct and memorable record from a powerful new talent in psyche-folk...LeftHip
Best known for his work in Jackie O Motherf*cker and Hall Of Fame (alongside Samara Lubelski), musician, filmmaker, and shaman (obviously), Theo Angell has made what his label describes as his masterwork. You can certainly imagine this otherworldy song cycle being unearthed in years to come by baffled cultures and being declared a lost classic. It has a folksy resonance, sounding as though the melodies and words are somehow steeped in traditional songs, but there's something slightly edgy, even perverse about Auraplinth. It might just be the massively unsettling artwork (look at that mask on the cover!) but there's a feel to this album perhaps best described as Manson-esque. The songs are actually rather beautifully written, and the recordings aren't too shabby either, but it's Angell's voice as a malleable sound source that's the key here, switching from upbeat country to mumbled mantras and multi-tracked weirdness, but always making some sort of sense when considered as part of the album's sprawling whole. Ace.

about

Theo Angell British Columbia

Theo Angell's densely hermetic iconography reflects an artist well-versed in mythology and the "other". And Theo's singing voice is unquestionably one of the most expressive and expansive in outsider folk today. Theo grew up in rural Oregon, was home-schooled along with his siblings by his minister father, which provided him little exposure to mainstream pop culture. (ForcedExposure) ... more
